Stigler starts Wilburton Roundball Classic, more tourney action

Stigler's basketball teams begin play in the Wilburton Roundball Classic this afternoon. Coach Wes Cloud and the boys hope for their first win while the girls look to extend their unbeaten start. Here's a look at all of today's games.

Stigler girls (4-0, ranked 19th in Class 3A) vs. Spiro (2-1) 4 p.m.

Last game: Stigler 54, Talihina 14; Spiro 46, Sallisaw 38.

Last meeting: Spiro 43, Stigler 21 (Dec. 17, 2015)

Notes: In the first round of the Wilburton tourney last year, Spiro slipped away from Stigler as the Panthers struggled with shooting confidence. The Panthers, which average 57.8 points per game, should score much more this time due to Madison Gilmore becoming a more assertive scorer as a senior and the Bulldogs incorporating new backcourt players.

Stigler boys (0-4) vs. Poteau (2-2) 5:30 p.m.

Last game: Talihina 76, Stigler 46; Poteau 69, Heavener 31.

Notes: Stigler has scored 43.8 points per the first four games while Poteau has averaged 56 per game.

McCurtain girls (2-9) vs. Panama (3-5) (Green Valley Conference tourney in Keota) 4 p.m.

Last game: Howe 68, McCurtain 17; Cameron 43, Panama 41.

Last meeting: McCurtain 44, Panama 43.

Notes: Panama is significantly smaller in the post this year, and the Bulldogs have hope to snap their five-game losing streak by attacking the post.

Porum girls (6-1) vs. Gore (1-3) 6:30 p.m.

Last game: Porum 47, Webbers Falls 38; Canadian 53, Gore 22.

Last meeting: Porum 60, Gore 31 (Jan. 29, 2016)

Notes: Porum's defense will be tough on Gore. The Panthers allow 32.3 points per game while the Pirates score 26.8 per game.

Porum boys (3-4) vs. Gore (0-5) 8 p.m.

Last game: Webbers Falls 64, Porum 51; Canadian 81, Gore 58.

Last meeting: Porum 55, Gore 22 (Jan. 29, 2016)

Notes: The Panthers have a good shot to end their three-game losing streak and enter Christmas break with a .500 record. Gore has allowed more than 70 points in its last four games.

Kinta boys (9-1, ranked No. 1 in Class B) vs. Savanna (5-1) (First National Bank Classic in McAlester) 8 p.m.

Last game: Kinta 64, Pittsburg 36; Savanna 68, Whitesboro 37.

Last meeting: Kinta 66, Savanna 45 (Dec. 14, 2015)

Notes: The Eagles beat the Bulldogs last year in the first round of the First National Bank Classic last year. Now, in a second-round meeting, Kinta must stop Savanna's three-point shooting after struggling to contain gunners in the Porum Armstrong Bank Tournament. Will Foris of Savanna hit six three-pointers against Whitesboro on Dec. 12. Kinta allowed 15 threes in the last two games of the Porum tourney.

Keota girls (2-4) vs. Wister (3-6) (GVC tourney) 8 p.m.

Last game: Keota 36, Arkoma 19; Wister 58, Bokoshe 49.

Last meeting: Keota 42, Wister 35 (Feb. 5, 2016)

Notes: Keota has scored 32.5 points per game, compared with 41.8 per game by Wister.
