Stigler shuts out Heavener, clinches district

Stigler’s football team quickly moved past Heavener for a 64-0 win as the Panthers clinched their first district title since 2012 at home on Friday, Oct. 28.

“That was a big goal for us,” senior wide receiver Dawson Barger said after his class earned its first district crown on Senior Night.

Also, Stigler earned its first shutout win since Oct. 15, 2009, against Spiro, as the Panthers held Heavener to 78 yards of total offense.

Stigler scored 40 points in the first quarter. Garret Brooks ran 50 yards on the first play from scrimmage before going seven yards for a touchdown.

With 8:43 left in the first quarter, T.J. Spearman deposited a pass to Bryce Turrentine, who took it 10 yards for a score.

“Everyone was really sharp. T.J. with his timing and Garret Brooks running behind our offensive line,” said Stigler coach Chris Risenhoover. On the following Heavener possession, Peyton Henson intercepted a pass. T

wo minutes later, Garon Mayhall ran four yards for a touchdown. After a 40-yard run by Brooks, Barger caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Spearman.

Spearman threw a 30-yard pass to Mayhall to set up a five-yard touchdown run by Brooks with 38 seconds left in the opening period. Twenty-seven seconds into the second quarter, Spearman pitched a 29-yard touchdown pass to Mayhall.

Lineman Keaton Shaffer blocked a punt in the second quarter. Spearman threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Barger with 5:18 left in the third quarter, giving Stigler a 56-0 lead. Turrentine ran 15 yards for a score with 6:12 left in the game. Spearman completed 11 of 13 passes for 215 yards.

Brooks totaled 230 yards rushing on 14 carries. Barger caught four passes for 136 yards.

Both are closing in on school records. With 1,917 career receiving yards, Barger is 92 yards away from the career receiving yards record held by John Henry Parsons. Brooks, who has run for 1,698 yards this year, is 185 yards away from the single-season record set by Cade Shearwood in 2011.

As Risenhoover brought out underclassmen on defense in the second quarter, freshman Mason Peery took the opportunity to lead the team with seven tackles and two sacks. Kenneth Van Tassel, Dalton Main and Ryan Bryant each had five tackles.

Stigler, which is third in Class 3A with 51.7 points per game, finishes the regular season on Nov. 4 against a Muldrow squad that allowed six points in the last two games to make the playoffs. Muldrow averages 33.2 points per game. The Bulldogs beat Roland 20-6 on Oct. 28.

“Our number one priority is staying healthy. We’ve got a great Muldrow team that has fast quarterback play and a lot of competitive kids,” Risenhoover said.
