Stigler looking for first win against Gore

Stigler's boys basketball team are much-improved, yet still looking for its first win as it sees Gore in the Sequoyah County Classic, following an opening round loss to Muldrow on Jan. 2 in the Sequoyah County Classic. The Panthers pressed hard and scored in transition, but the Bulldogs slipped away with 13 unanswered points.

Here's a look at the Stigler-Gore matchup, which tips off this evening at 5:30 p.m. in Sallisaw.

Panthers (0-7) vs. PIrates (0-7)

Last game: Muldrow 54, Stigler 45; Sallisaw Central 74, Gore 36.

Last meeting: Stigler 74, Gore 26 (Jan. 6, 2016)

Notes: The Panthers downed the Pirates in their second game of the Sequoyah County tourney last year and desparately desire to do so again in the same spot. Stigler's Jaxon Calhoun had four steals against Muldrow, turning two of those into fast break layups. The Panthers will have opportunites to force turnovers against Gore. Like Stigler, Gore has a young team with only one senior.

Gore has lost its last six games by 18 points or more. The Panthers average 43.3 points per game while the Pirates have scored 46.6 per game.

The 54 points Stigler allowed against Muldrow were the second-fewest they've allowed this season.

The winner plays the Gans-Sallisaw winner at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6.
