Stigler girls meet Poteau in Wilburton, more area tourney hoops

Stigler's girls basketball team held off Spiro in the Wilburton Roundball Classic opener on Dec. 15 to extend its unbeaten start to 5-0, and now faces Poteau in the semifinals. Also, Keota and McCurtain try to survive and advance in the Green Valley Conference Tournament. Here's the the full slate for today.

Stigler boys (0-5) vs. Hartshorne (3-3) (Wilburton Roundball Classic) 11:30 a.m.

Last game: Poteau 80, Stigler 46; Red Oak 51, Hartshorne 50.

Last meeting: Hartshorne 59, Stigler 48 (Feb. 2, 2016)

Notes: Red Oak sent Hartshorne to the consolation side with a layup in the closing seconds. The Panthers won two of three games against the Miners last season. Calen Humphries scored 11 points in the Panthers' first round loss to Poteau.

Stigler girls (5-0) vs. Poteau (3-2) (WRC) 7 p.m.

Last game: Stigler 42, Spiro 37; Poteau 59, Wilburton 50.

Notes: Shauntey Hays scored 16 points in the win against Spiro and has 37 points in the last two games. The Panthers have allowed 27.4 points per game while the Pirates have scored 51.6 per game. The victor plays the Red Oak-Eufaula winner in the final on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 6 p.m. The loser heads to the third place game at 3 p.m. that day.

McCurtain (4-8) vs. Bokoshe (4-4) (Green Valley Conference Tournament in Keota) 4 p.m.

Last game: Arkoma 100, McCurtain 89; Wister 73, Bokoshe 44.

Last meeting: McCurtain 60, Bokoshe 36 (Feb. 5, 2016)

Notes: McCurtain had three players scoring more than 20 points against Arkoma on Dec. 13. The Bulldogs have scored 57.8 points per game, compared with 46 per game by the Tigers.

Keota boys (1-5) vs. Cameron (4-8) (GVC tourney) 5:20 p.m.

Last game: Howe 76, Keota 47; Panama 68, Cameron 34.

Last meeting: Keota 47, Cameron 41 (Dec. 12, 2015)

Notes: Keota beat Cameron in the first round of the tournament last year, and now hope for a victory in the consolation round against the Yellow Jackets to snap a four-game losing streak. Cameron's seen its share of tough opponents, and has lost four of five games against ranked foes.

Kinta girls (3-6) vs. Calera (2-7) (First National Bank Classic in McAlester) 6:40 p.m.

Last game: Stuart 74, Kinta 39; Savanna 70, Calera 41.

Last meeting: Calera 57, Kinta 23 (Dec. 14, 2015)

Notes: Kinta's 39 points against Stuart on Dec. 12 were its most in the six-game losing streak since Cianna Titsworth was injured. Calera has lost five straight games, failing to hold an opponent under 50 during that streak. The Eagles lost to Calera last year in the first round of the tournament and now hope to beat the Bulldogs to reach the consolation final like last year.
