Porum-Kinta highlights day of tourney hoops

Porum and Kinta's boys basketball teams will face off in the Porum Armstrong Bank Tournament semifinals as the Panthers try to match a deep Eagles squad. Also, Keota and Quinton continue in the Quinton Farmers State Bank Hardwood Tournament. Here's a look at the games.

Porum boys (3-1) vs. Kinta (7-0, ranked No. 1 in Class B) 8:30 p.m.

Last game: Porum 57, Panama 48; Kinta 60, Cave Springs 36.

Notes: Porum's Mason Coulston, who averages 21.3 points per game, is the strongest scorer the Eagles will face to this point in the season. The key matchup will be at point guard between Porum's Zach Schuelen and Kinta's Brett Williams. Schuelen has improved significantly as a scorer and ball-handler this season, but will still be challenged by Williams' ability to create turnovers. Jude Johnson has emerged as a powerful inside presence for Kinta. He's a consistent threat to score 20 points, having scored 23 in the opening round against Cave Springs on Dec. 6 and 33 at Canadian on Dec. 2.

Keota girls (1-3) vs. Wetumka (2-2) 10 a.m.

Last game: Caddo 63, Keota 20; Quinton 49, Wetumka 29.

Notes: Samantha Carry has led the Lions in scoring the past two games, scoring 18 points between the two contests.

Keota boys (1-3) vs. Morris (1-4) 2:30 p.m.

Last game: Silo 80, Keota 23; Quinton 50, Morris 47.

Notes: The Lions have allowed 164 points while losing back-to-back games. For Keota, Bryson McClary has 25 points in the last two games and Jackson Cole has 27 points in the last three games.

Quinton girls (2-1, ranked 16th in Class 2A) vs. Caddo (6-0, ranked 17th in 2A) 7 p.m.

Last game: Quinton 49, Wetumka 29; Caddo 63, Keota 20.

Notes: Quinton swarmed Wetumka in the first round, getting several steals with its full court press. With more than 40 steals in the first three games and 28.7 points allowed per game, the Savages will pose problems for a Caddo team that averages 58 points per game.

Quinton boys (1-2) vs. Silo (5-1) 8:30 p.m.

Last game: Quinton 50, Morris 47; Silo 80, Keota 23.

Last meeting: Silo 51, Quinton 40 (Dec. 14, 2013)

Notes: Quinton coach Darren Harber earned his first win as a head coach in the opening round against Morris. Silo has plenty of size with five players listed at 6'1" or taller. Quinton should matchup well with the Rebels since it has seven players who are at least that tall. The challenge for the Savages' big men is defending the above-the-rim Rebels like Jake Hamilton.
