Keota wins sixth straight game, looks to playoffs

Keota’s football team cruised to a 58-22 victory at home against Cave Springs on Friday, Nov. 4, winning its sixth straight game entering the playoffs.

“We played flat at times, but in certain parts of the game we got things going for a while. Despite the record [Cave Springs] has, you can tell they work hard. We made some substitutions and moved guys around,” Keota coach Eric Henry said. “It’s different with a win in Week 10. Hopefully, we take that momentum going into the playoffs.”

Keota (7-3) took a 28-0 lead on a five-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Bryant to Knute Dumas with 1:10 left in the first quarter. Brandon Geer intercepted a pass at the end of the half, running it 35 yards as Keota led 36-6 at halftime.

Bryant ran five yards for a touchdown at the 8:04 mark of the third quarter. With 10:10 left in the fourth quarter, Trevor Bryant returned an interception for a touchdown, giving Keota a 52-12 lead.

Eight minutes later, Logan Scoggins ran eight yards for a touchdown to end it.

Bryant ran for 57 yards and a touchdown and completed five of seven passes for 119 yards. Dumas caught all five of Bryant’s passes and rushed for 33 yards. Garren Drummonds rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Bryant and Kaleb Heffner tied for the team lead with nine tackles. Kevin McKenzie had eight tackles and two sacks. Dumas and Heffner both recovered fumbles.

For the first round of the playoffs on Nov. 11, Keota hosts Prue (4-6), which had been in Class C the previous six years. “We haven’t played Prue since I’ve been here,” Henry said. “We’re going to see a few new faces. They expanded Class B. We’ve got 10 more teams than last year. Hopefully, we can take care of business on Friday.” Prue, which has lost four straight games, has scored 25.8 points per game and allowed 37.6 per game. Keota enters the playoffs 10th in Class B in scoring (43.4 points per game) and scoring defense (20 points allowed per game). With a win against Prue, Keota would host the winner of Wetumka and Allen on Nov. 18.
