Keota wins on the road at Porum

Keota’s football team highlighted the strength of its running combination in a 52-6 win at Porum on Friday, Oct. 7.

The Lions’ three starting rushers, Garren Drummonds, Trevor Bryant and Knute Dumas combined for 348 yards as they won back-to-back games for the first time this season

“To get a couple wins sure makes a difference in momentum and the practice atmosphere from week to week. The kids are focused and had something to prove just to get back to .500. They came out firing on all cylinders,” said Keota coach Eric Henry.

Drummonds had 137 yards and three touchdowns. Dumas ran for 124 yards and a touchdown. Bryant needed just three carries to get 87 yards and two touchdowns.

After a 16-yard run by Drummonds, Bryant broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown run.

Drummonds pushed his way through a couple of Porum defenders before breaking away for a 35-yard touchdown run at the 6:56 mark of the first quarter. His 33-yard touchdown run two minutes later put Keota’s lead at 22-0. He intercepted a pass with 2:24 left in the first quarter.

Dumas ran 74 yards for a touchdown with 1:37 left in the first quarter, allowing the Lions (3-3) to finish the opening period leading 30-0.

Bryant nudged his way to a one-yard touchdown run with 9:21 left in the second quarter. A six-yard touchdown run by Drummonds gave Keota a 44-0 advantage.

Porum’s Colt McMellon intercepted a pass by Keota’s Cash Long and returned it for a touchdown late in the second quarter, giving the Panthers (3-3) a boost as they entered the half trailing 44-6.

Porum lineman Chris Garcia recovered two fumbles, first a muffed punt at Keota’s 47-yard line in the second quarter and later a fumble early in the third quarter.

Dumas recovered a fumble and scampered 70 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to finish the district-opening win.

“Winning districts was one of those goals we set. We just took the first step to that goal,” Henry said.

Bryant completed two passes, both of which were caught by Jackson Cole. Bryant led the team with 13 tackles and recovered a fumble. Remington McGuire had 11 tackles. Kaleb Heffner collected 10 tackles. Kevin McKenzie had eight tackles and a sack.

Keota looks to take down its main competitor for the district title, Arkoma (6-0) at home on Thursday, Oct. 13. The Mustangs beat Watts 46-40 in overtime on Oct. 7.

“We’ll have to be sound on both sides of the ball. Arkoma’s one of the frontrunners for our district,” Henry said.

Meanwhile, Porum prepares to visit Gans (3-3), which has won three of its last four games. The Grizzlies average 14.7 points per game while allowing 27.5 per game. Porum has scored 25.3 points per game and allowed 44.3 per game.
