Ruby Teague

Ruby Thelma Teague, 95 years old, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016. Ruby was born June 3, 1921 to Jessie and Eva Anderson in the southeast corner of Oklahoma. She was the second of seven children, with only three living to maturity. The family was very poor due to the Great Depression and other factors. Ruby worked in the fields with the men during the day and then did much of the women’s work in the evening. She talked about doing the family wash on the rub board.
At the age of 18 she married Delmar Goodwin and later divorced him. From that marriage came three little girls. The first were twins, Jeweldean and Geraline.  Jeweldean passed away at the age of five months.  Then in February 1943, the third child, Zella, was born.
Ruby worked hard to support her girls. She first took in washing and ironing for people and then worked in a laundry. She was a waitress and later a telephone operator. That was when you picked up your phone and a lady said, “Number please.”
In 1948, she went to a dance with her best friend.  She met a tall, good-looking veteran of WWII. When the girls left the dance, Ruby told her friend, “I just met the man I’m going to marry.” And she did. She and O’Neal Teague were married almost 60 years.  To that marriage was born a son, B. Neal Teague, and a daughter, Lynnda Sooter. After O’Neal graduated from OSU with a degree in agriculture, the family lived in Eufaula, Wewoka, Stigler, and finally moved to Vinita in 1966.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, numerous siblings, her husband, another daughter and a grandson.
