Paul Cooper

Paul Eugene Cooper of Stigler was born in Morris to Paul Benjamin and Viola Ruth (Smith) Cooper on Nov. 18, 1923. He passed away Feb. 19, 2019, in Muskogee at the age of 95 years, three months and one day.

He is survived by his wife, Letty Cooper, of the home; one daughter, Letty N. Cooper of Stigler; two sons, Gene Leroy Cooper of Stigler and Ben Cooper and wife, Nancy, of Stigler; one sister, Helen Jones of Georgia; five grandchildren, Amanda Terrell and husband, Jerrod, of Stigler, Brandon Cooper and wife, Heather, of Jones, Christy Stanfield and husband, Patrick, of Quinton, Katie Simpson and husband, Matt, of Hoyt and Katie Terreros and husband, Danny, of Prairie Village, Kan.; great-grandkids, Drew, Tryston and Madelyn Stanfield, Ruby, Josie and Duke Cooper, Emma and Chaseton Simpson, Maverick and Mila Mooney, Jackson, Hudson and Emerson Terreros and Jaxon and Amilya Terrell; two special nieces, Paula Cobb of Newark, Del. and Sara Donaldson of Athens, Ga.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Viola Ruth; one brother, Lloyd Dale Cooper and one sister, Wanda Weeks.

Paul enlisted in the Marine Corps on May 8, 1943, and attended boot camp at Marine Corps Base in San Diego, Calif. After boot camp, he was transferred to Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif., where he was attached to the 29th Replacement Battalion. During the last of August 1943, he was transferred to the 14th Marines, being assigned to 4-L-14.

He saw action at Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima, before returning home. He returned to the United States on Nov. 2, 1945, and was honorably discharged from military service on Nov. 21, 1945. He married Letty Lytle in 1948. He and his wife, Letty, graduated from college in 1950. After a career in the public school administration, he retired in 1986.

He served as deacon at Mountain Home Baptist Church and Whitefield Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019, at Antioch Baptist Church in Stigler with the Rev. Willard Francis and Bill Self officiating. Interment followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Beaver Mountain under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory of Stigler.

Viewing was from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019, with family visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home in Stigler.

Military Honors were provided by U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard of Broken Arrow.

Pallbearers were Brandon Cooper, Patrick Stanfield, Jerrod Terrell, Matt Simpson, Drew Stanfield and Tryston Stanfield.

Honorary pallbearers were the men of Antioch Baptist Church.
