Lorene Eakle

Lorene Eakle was born in Quinton to Newt and Edith (Hood) Gray on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 1918. One of six children, she lived her entire life in the community in and around Quinton, and influenced the people there in countless ways. Granny passed away on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at the age of 100 years, two months and 13 days.

She married Henry Eakle on Dec. 18, 1937, and together they had three children, Reta Joyce and her husband, Charlie “Doc” Shelton, of Glendale, Ariz., Jerry Eakle and his wife, Lois, of Quinton and Arlanda Eakle of Quinton. Henry preceded her in death, as did her siblings, Pat Hood, Era Mae Gray, Elmer Gray, Ola Johnson and Melvin “Peanut” Gray.

Granny’s legacy of family can be found in her 11 grandchildren, Tracy Shelton, Karen Shelton, Arlinda Eakle, Shana Eakle, Chris Shelton, Penny Stamper, Cattrina Gragg, Amanda Shelton, Trent Eakle, Cassie White and Hank Eakle, as well as her numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Granny loved God, her family and her church. She gave of herself entirely to each of these, always putting the interest of others before her own. When she did indulge in a hobby, it was gardening, sewing, crocheting, cooking, singing and, more often than not, humming.
