Jewell ‘Marie’ Hollie

Jewell Marie Hollie was born Sept. 18, 1929 in Brooken the daughter of the Rev. Robert and Euna (Lock) Shaw.

She passed from this life on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019 in Sapulpa at the age of 89 years, four months and six days.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wendell, both her parents and her sisters, Arlene Brown and Lucille Mahan.

Marie lived in Brooken for most of her childhood, then moved to Whitefield in her teenage years. Marie and her sisters Arlene and Lucille sang at churches and community gatherings in the area. Her father, Robert, held Singing Schools where they went around to churches in the area and had classes on singing and a presentation at the end, similar to Vacation Bible Schools now.

Her love of drawing and painting began when she was young and continued throughout her life. She painted people, scenery and flowers, but sketching and painting famous people was her favorite. Her children and grandchildren have enjoyed her artwork for years, she was a very gifted artist.

Marie met Wendell when she went to the Whitefield Grocery Store and saw him carrying large bags of feed and was impressed. She was already friends with his sister Junie from the Singing Schools and they married on Sept. 30, 1948. They moved to Oakland, Calif. shortly after their marriage. On May 17, 1952, they were blessed with a daughter, Janet Lee Hollie and on April 25, 1955 a son, Mark Dwain Hollie. They moved back to Oklahoma in 1957 and resided in the West Tulsa area until she passed away. She loved to read, sew, work crossword puzzles and games. The last few months of her life were spent in The Gardens Nursing Home in Sapulpa and the last few weeks assisted by Grace Hospice. The Gardens and Grace Hospice took such loving care of Marie during her stay and when the funeral home came to get her body, they called a Code Angel and all the staff lined the halls to say their good byes as she was wheeled out and to comfort the family. We can never thank them enough for all they did to make her last days so very sweet.

Her survivors include her children, Janet Upshaw and husband, Mike, of Sapulpa and Mark Hollie and wife, Pam, of Berryhill; grandsons, Mathew Reed of Tulsa, Bryan Hollie and wife, Karie, of Berryhill and Justin Hollie and wife, Galilee, of Berryhill; great-grandchildren, Michealyn, Taylor, Jordan, Macie, Grant, Graham and Ryder.
