Janet Kay Applekamp, 62, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 25, 2021. Ms. Applekamp was born Dec. 5, 1958, in Stigler, Okla., to Carl and Emma Lou Hill. She lived her entire life in Oklahoma, having spent over two decades in McAlester until her recent retirement and transition to Frisco, Texas, to embrace her cherished role as Nana. She will be remembered as one who absolutely adored her three grandchildren, Emma, Carson and Cade, believing these fantastic kids truly hung the moon.

Janet was passionate to see others learn and thrive. A lifelong teacher, she served the McAlester community as school counselor for Emerson Elementary, later retiring as counselor from McAlester High School. She especially enjoyed her final career role, working with students to overcome obstacles and discover pathways to college and beyond.

She loved participating in community activities, faithfully supporting Life Church since its founding, and serving as an active band and wrestling mom for the McAlester Buffaloes during her children’s time at MHS.

Janet’s heart was her family, and she loved crafting memorable moments for their time together. She enjoyed enhancing the every-day for friends and family through thoughtful gift giving, planning favorite food items; and designing warm, cozy environments that would delight those around her.

Survivors include daughter, Jennifer Hummel and husband, Nathanial, of Frisco, Texas; son, Joshua Applekamp of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Emma, Carson and Cade Hummel, Frisco, Texas; sister-in-law, Kathy Hill of Portland, Ore.; niece Julie (Hill) Langford and husband, Andrew, and their children Benjamin and Evelyn of Portland, Ore.

Services will be Monday, May 3, at Life Church with the Rev. Terren Anderson officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at the Stigler Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her father, Carl Hill; mother, Emma Lou Hill of Stigler; brother, Roger Hill of McAlester; and beloved dog, Jericho.
