Evelyn Moore

Evelyn Ruth (Hayden) Moore was born July 4, 1920, in Porum, the daughter of Gussie (Poole) Hayden and Rees Hayden. She passed away at Windsor Place in Coffeyville, Kan., on Aug. 9, 2018. She was 98 years old. She lived all her life in Porum. She was raised on a farm north of Porum. She attended school at Hickory Ridge in first and second grades then started at Porum in the third grade and continued until her graduation in 1938.

She attended Connors State College in Warner, where she graduated with an associate degree. She continued her education at Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree. She started teaching when she was 20 years old at several country schools around Porum, including Briartown, Victory, Turpin, Gap Prairie and Ross. She then taught first grade at Porum for the next 32 years. She taught for a total of 41 years.

Evelyn was an active member of the Porum United Methodist Church and the Women’s Society of Christian Service, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as worthy matron, and the Muskogee County Retired Teachers Association. She married James L. (J.L.) Moore Jr. on Nov. 16, 1940, in Afton. They were married for more than 50 years.

She enjoyed working outside in her flower and vegetable garden, playing Bingo, going fishing, being with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Jimmye Lea Barton of Caney, Kan.; two granddaughters, Cynthia Renee (Barton) Todd and husband, Justin, of Havana, Kan., and Dana Leigh Barton of Caney, Kan.; two great-grandsons, Jake Allen Todd of Dewey and Chance Lowery Todd of Havana, Kan.; one sister, Geneva Lee Hayden Rogers; four nephews, Bill Maxey and wife, Millie, Bob Maxey and wife, Brenda, Tim Maxey and wife, Rae and Keith Glisson and wife, Rebecca; several great-nieces and great-nephews; one ex-son-in-law, Kendall Lee Barton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gussie (Poole) Hayden and Rees Hayden; brother, Rees Hayden; two sisters, Stella (Hayden) Maxey; infant sister, Carrie Bell Hayden and one nephew, Martin Glisson.

Memorials may include Windsor Place in Coffeyville, Kan.; Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Coffeyville, Kan.; Porum Public Schools in Porum or any charity of the donor’s choice.

Pallbearers will be Leroy Burnett, Keith Glisson, Mike Killian, Bill Maxey, Tim Maxey and Justin Todd.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kendall Barton, Larry Nelson, Bob Maxey, Larry Max Stewart, Chance Todd and Jake Todd.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Porum with Jim Whitman officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhill Cemetery in Muskogee.
