Doris Barnett

Doris Regina (Hare) Barnett went to be with the Lord on Jan. 27, 2019, in Owasso at the age of 91. She had been living at Mimosa Assisted Living Baptist Village for several years near her daughter Donna.

Doris was born in Conway, Ark. on June 22, 1927, to Henry Russell and Bessie Mae (Maddox) Hare. The family later moved to Keota, where Doris grew up attending Keota Public School. She graduated high school in 1946. In the fall of that year she married Billy Gene (Bill) Barnett. They lived their early married life there before moving to Stigler, where they had their three daughters, and lived the rest of their married life. After 66 years of marriage, Bill passed away in 2013.

She is survived by three daughters, Donna Benham and husband, Tom, of Collinsville, Kathy Rene’ Barnett of Los Angeles, Calif. and Lisa Mazzolini of Knoxville, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Tina Doty and husband, Ben, of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandsons, Jon Benham and wife, Kelly, of Collinsville,  Grant Benham of Boston, Mass., Brad Benham of Tulsa, Craig Benham and wife, Laura, of Guthrie, Devin Sappington and wife, Jacque, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Adam Mazzolini and wife, Heather, of Morganton, N.C. and Tim Mazzolini and wife, Michelle, of Cleveland, Tenn.; 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her precious granddaughter, Jolie Golden-Valtierra; her parents, Henry and Bessie; two brothers, Quentin Hare and Namon Hare and one sister, Marcella Weber.

Doris was a homemaker and also involved in the community groups, Mothers’ Club and ESA. She and Bill were long-time members of Calvary Baptist Church (now Main Street Baptist) and First Baptist Church of Stigler. At Calvary Baptist, they led a youth training union class and assisted the church treasurer. Doris was active in WMU.

Doris was an excellent cook. Her children and grandchildren greatly enjoyed the delicious meals she prepared for them on so many occasions. They have many happy wonderful memories of being at Mammy’s and Papa Bill’s.

Doris was also a good seamstress and taught her daughters these skills. Besides clothing, she made numerous costumes for school activities any time the girls needed them. After raising the girls, Doris completed a drivers’ education class taught by Joe Benham. She then enjoyed commuting to Connors State College for several classes.

After Bill’s retirement, they enjoyed buying and selling travel trailers from their home. Many people didn’t realize that Doris was a very accomplished salesperson herself. Many of their happiest times were spent traveling all over the United States in their motor home with their good friends, the Rushings, Gaithers and Biggs.

Doris and Bill were avid OU football fans and made certain to watch all the Sooner games on television. Doris continued this tradition, wearing her OU sweatshirt, after moving to her assisted living home. Also at the assisted living, she never missed playing bingo and card games with all the new friends she had made there.

Doris considered her greatest joy in life to be raising her daughters and spending time with them and their families.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at Mallory Chapel in Stigler. Burial followed at Stigler City Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Brad Benham, Craig Benham, Devin Sappington, Jon Benham, Adam Mazzolini, Grant Benham and Tim Mazzolini.

Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Cantrell, Allen Hare, Charles Hare, Gary Dunn, Joe Benham and Neil Yost.
