Calvin Coolidge Cook

Calvin Coolidge Cook was born in Star on Aug.1, 1924, to Leonard and Lavada (Everhart) Cook.  He passed away on Jan.6, 2020, in Stigler at the age of 95.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol Dunlap and husband, Jack, of Stigler, Nynva Brown and husband, Terry, of Springfield, Mo.; one stepdaughter-in-law, Glennis Simmons of California; one son, Robert Chapman and wife, Earlene, of Cartersville; one sister, Iona Ward of Stigler; his grandchildren, Mike Dunlap, Valerie Thomas, Shawn Chapman, Breck Chapman and Nicol Barnett; and several great-grandchildren.

Calvin was preceded in death by his father and mother, Leonard and Lavada Cook; his two wives, Juanita Whiteside Cook and Jane Dunkin Cook; his brother, Marvin Cook; his sister, Leona Bridges; his son, Carl Calvin Cook; his stepson, Sheryl Simmons; his grandson, Christopher Cook; and his step grandson, Brett Simmons.

Calvin attended school at Star until eighth grade. He had to quit school to work on the farm. He was drafted into the Air Force in 1943. He received a World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, EAMC Theater Ribbon and Bronze Service Star. He received an honorable discharge from the service in January of 1946. He moved to Cartersville and met and married Juanita Whiteside Chapman on Aug. 22, 1946, at Lone Elm Church near Keota. Juanita passed away in 1964.

Calvin and his dad, Leonard Cook, were carpenters after the Keota tornado. They built several houses in and around Keota.  

Calvin married Edna Jane Dunkin in 1972 in Keota. They built a cabinet shop in Keota and had several people working for them, making and selling cabinets. Jane passed away in 2006.

Calvin lived in his house on Highway 9 until 2019, when he moved to the nursing center.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020, at Mallory Chapel in Stigler with Bro. Tommie Parker officiating.  Interment followed at Old Cache Cemetery under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory of Stigler.

Viewing was from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2019, at Mallory Chapel in Stigler; with family visitation from 6 to 7 p.m.

Pallbearers were Mike Duncan, Mike Dunlap,  Breck Chapman, Cecil Bratton, David Bratton and Justin Wood.

Honorary pallbearer was Billy Blankenship.
