Betty Hurst

Betty Hurst, 90, of Stigler, passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018, at Haskell County Nursing Center of Stigler. She was born June 27, 1928, in Butler to James and Essie (Trent) Elmore. When she was seven or eight years old, the family moved to Stigler. She attended school here through the 10th grade. She then moved to Tulsa to help out an aunt, and graduated from Tulsa Central High School. She returned to her family in Stigler after graduating, where Miss Betty met the “love of her life” and future husband, Lennard “Windy” Hurst, at Scotties, now known as Shelly’s Restaurant, on VJ Day, Victory over Japan. They were married on March 5, 1949, in Indianapolis, Ind. They shared their first 30 years in N.W. Indiana

Miss Betty was an avid writer; not one to lose contact with family and friends, sending letters and cards with all the family news, also making annual trips to Stigler and Indianapolis. Miss Betty was also quite the seamstress, making many of her own outfits, clothes for others, quilts, even wedding dresses.

Miss Betty and Windy loved camping and fishing with their three sons, sometimes for several weeks at a time. Miss Betty didn’t hunt, but was happy to prepare whatever her “fellas” brought home. And of course, had to have dessert at every meal. She loved gardening from start to finish, from planting to canning.

Miss Betty and Windy enjoyed their ranch with everything that came with it, the cattle, horses, chickens, guineas, dogs and cats. What they loved the most was when the kids, grandkids and/or the great-grandkids came to visit and enjoyed the ranch life with them. She loved her life and family that were near and far. She was a member of Stigler First Assembly of God Church.

Miss Betty is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Lois Hurst of Plant City, Fla., Conard and Sony Hurst of Stigler and Jerry and Donna Hurst of Springville, Tenn..; five grandkids, Christopher Hurst, Marsha and Stoney Oldham, Jennifer and Wesley Wilson, Amie and Glen Monday and Crystal and Kyle Alexander; three step-grandkids, Abigail and David Aponte, Jessica Santiago and Johnny and Brandi Santiago; 16 great-grandkids; five step-great-grandkids; six great-great-grandkids and numerous other relatives and friends.

Miss Betty was preceded in death by her parents, James and Essie Elmore; her husband, Windy Hurst; a grandson, Jerry Lee Hurst; four brothers, Lloyd, James, Kenneth Elmore and a stillborn little brother and three sisters, Ima Marie Faulkner, Ala Mae Costello and Wanda Sue Taylor.
