Bernice Oliver Baxter

Bernice Oliver Baxter was born March 8, 1937 in Stigler to Vollie “Dick” Oliver and Irene (Johnson) Oliver. Her family moved back and forth from the San Joaquin Valley in California to the Haskell County area while she was growing up. 

After graduating from Wasco High School in 1954 she moved to Stigler to stay. She was married to James B. Baxter on December 16, 1960 and raised their son Jay together. She worked for Haskell County at the court house and Ben Franklin for several years before starting her career with Dixon Farm Supply for 28 years, as well as decorating cakes on the side which she so enjoyed. 

After retirement she worked for King & Shearwood Funeral Home for 17 years until her health forced her to quit.

 She was very proud of her 50 years of service as Church Secretary at the Freewill Baptist Church of Stigler. She was also proud of her 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren

Bernice is survived by her son & daughter-in-law, Jay V. & April Baxter of Fresno, California; 3 grandchildren, Brittany, Dylan Jaymes "D.J." and Emily; 2 great grandchildren, Cohen, Ava.

Bernice is preceded in death by her parents, Dick & Irene Oliver; her husband, James B. Baxter; a brother, Norman Oliver.

Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 30, 2021 at Stigler Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor David Bigger officiating. Pallbearers include Larry Godfrey, Carl Godfrey, Ricky Belt Jr., John Turrentine, Jeff King, Marty Shearwood. Honorary Pallbearers will be Rick Spradley, Gerald Cleveland, Steve Reasnor.

Burial will follow in Stigler Cemetery under the direction of King & Shearwood Funeral Home of Stigler.
