WINTER WEATHER: Highway Conditions Alert 2-16-21 as of 11:15 a.m.

Mid-morning sunlight across the state is aiding further melting of snow-pack and slick spots on many Oklahoma highways, however, Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews warn motorists not to become complacent as extremely low temperatures continue to hamper complete clearing of roadways.

Snow-packed and slick highways and interstates are reported across central and eastern Oklahoma and portions of western Oklahoma with crews tackling snow drifts and remaining slick spots, Crews also are preparing for another round of snow later today that is expected to produce more conditions not favorable for travel.

Dangerous and life-threatening situations could occur should drivers become stranded in this winter weather event. Travel remains discouraged at this time.

Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro area highways while mostly clear remain slick in spots and crews are clearing shoulders and treating ramps.

Interstates and other major corridors such as I-35, I-40, I-44, US-75 and US-69 remain slick in spots with crews continuing to treat any wet areas that refroze overnight.

Those who must travel are reminded that while many highways are dry in long sections, slick spots remain and can catch motorists unaware. Slowing down, driving defensively and continuing to use extra caution will be the best ways to prevent potential problems.

Crews will continue around-the-clock operations throughout today and until all highways and interstates are clear, which will take time. Drivers should keep at least 200 feet behind ODOT's mobile plowing operations.

Current highway and interstate conditions can be viewed with an interactive map at https://www.okroads.org and also on the Drive Oklahoma mobile app.

REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, if travel is absolutely necessary, drivers should:

  • Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
  • Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
  • Be patient and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
