WINTER WEATHER: Highway Conditions Alert 2-15-21 as of 4:30 p.m.

From the Oklahoma Department of Transportation

Oklahoma highway conditions saw significant improvement through Monday afternoon with the end of widespread snow fall, however, motorists should be alert to remaining snow pack and slick spots statewide. Crews focused on loosening snow pack and treating slick spots throughout the day to clear highways as much as possible before another round of snow fall heads into the state.

Dangerous and life-threatening situations could occur should drivers become stranded in the storm. Travel remains highly discouraged at this time.

Continuing the mid-morning trend, the areas with the most improvement are in western and northwestern Oklahoma and the Panhandle, which saw lanes clear in many areas. However, slick spots remain in several counties along with some areas of drifting snow.

Northcentral and southcentral Oklahoma highways continue to be snow-packed and slick in spots with crews working to push drifts back from driving lanes. The eastern half of the state also saw conditions improve into the afternoon with remaining slick spots in areas.

The Oklahoma City metro counties have improved, but remain patchy with snow and slick spots. Similar conditions are impacting Tulsa metro area highways with intermittent snow cover.

Interstate corridors such as I-35, I-40, I-44 and US-69 remain slick in spots with crews treating as needed.

Motorists are reminded to slow down because slick spots remain and may not be very visible. If travel is necessary going into the evening, motorists should use extra caution on bridges, overpasses and when entering or exiting highways.

Current highway and interstate conditions can be viewed with an interactive map at https://www.okroads.org and also on the Drive Oklahoma mobile app.

REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, if travel is absolutely necessary, motorists are asked to:

  • Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
  • Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
  • Be patient and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
