Winter Weather Alert - State Highway Conditions

WINTER WEATHER: Highway Conditions Alert 2-9-21 as of 5:30 a.m.

Slick and hazardous conditions continue to be reported across much of the northern portions of the state and now include areas of southeastern Oklahoma. Freezing drizzle and mist continue to impact bridges and overpasses in several areas including western, central and southeastern Oklahoma this morning and travel remains discouraged in impacted areas. Drivers who must be out are reminded to plan extra travel time, drive for conditions and lower their speed. Many highways may appear to be clear but are actually slick with a thin coating of ice, especially on bridges and overpasses.

While portions of northwestern and northeastern Oklahoma remain slick and hazardous due to overnight refreezing, most precipitation has stopped in those areas this morning. Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews caution that conditions are not likely to improve this morning until after sunrise if temperatures improve.

Crews are continuing around-the-clock emergency operations for this winter storm and will be working until all roadways are clear. Due to the extremely slick conditions, trucks applying salt and sand may be driving slower and drivers should be alert to these operations and give them ample room to work, remaining at least 200 feet apart.

Conditions remain slick and hazardous in both the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas due to icy conditions, however, there currently are no closures along the I-35 and I-40 corridors.

Motorists should remain alert to quickly weather deteriorating conditions especially at bridges and overpasses. Check road conditions at https://www.okroads.org or on the Drive Oklahoma mobile app.

REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:

• Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.

• Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.

• Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.

• Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
