Most area schools set decisions regarding walkout

After bills were passed by the Oklahoma legislature and signed by Governor Mary Fallin giving teachers pay raises, most area schools have decided to return to class early next week.

  • Stigler's school board held a special meeting on Thursday in which it decided to take no action on the walkout.
  • Quinton and McCurtain will be out Monday to go to the capitol and return to class on Tuesday. Porum will also be out Monday and resume class Tuesday.
  • Keota will be in class on Monday.
  • Whitefield, which will be off for Easter Monday as Stigler is, will be back on Tuesday.
  • However, Kinta will be out Monday and Tuesday. Kinta Public Schools Superintendent Patricia DeVille said that her school will decide early next week whether to continue the walkout. DeVille said she and her employees are waiting for the governor to sign bills related to funding school aid and raises for support staff. "I cannot in good conscience take a pay raise and not give one to my support staff," she said.
