Crowds gather for Opening Day at sports complex

Crowds estimated at about 2,000 were at Stigler’s new sports complex all day on Opening Day Saturday, July 20, according to City Manager Bobby Mouser.

Opening Day activities included tournaments, stickball exhibitions, adult soccer games, the opening ceremony, fishing and playing on the playground.

Thirty-two teams from three states participated in the tournaments. Games began in the morning and continued until about 2 a.m. the next morning, Mouser said.

The parking lot, which was designed for approximately 500 vehicles, was full throughout the day, until about 11 p.m.

“We had wonderful crowds at both the ballfields and the multi-purpose fields,” Mouser said.

Mouser thanked Adam Engle, Stigler Sports and Recreation Department director, and Ryan Curson, facility maintenance manager at the complex, for recruiting the teams to play in the late-season tournament on Saturday.

Opening Day was a success, according to Engle. “It went as well as I could possibly imagine,” he said, adding that the feedback received was “all positive.” He was pleased with the teams who played in the Opening Day tournament. “We had literally some of the best teams in Oklahoma come play in Stigler this weekend,” he said. “Every bracket was an extremely high competitive bracket.”

The new sports complex, which offers fields for multiple sports, batting cages, a children’s playground, fishing pond and concessions, was built with funds provided by a partnership between the city of Stigler and the Choctaw Nation.

Mouser said he wanted to “thank the Choctaw Nation for partnering with the city of Stigler to provide a world-class venue for this part of the state, for young and old alike to have a place to gather and play sports and have great fellowship together.”
