Beef Tip Cattle Lice

During the winter months be on the look out for Lice. These critters are small, flattened, wingless insect parasites of which there are several species, most of which become evident during this time period.

Symptoms and Signs

There may be severe itching and the animal may be seen scratching, rubbing and gnawing at the skin. Animal symptoms include intense irritation, restlessness, and loss of condition. The hair may be rough, thin, and lack luster.

Treatment

For effective control, all members of the herd must be treated simultaneously at intervals, and this is especially necessary during the autumn months or about the time they may be placed in winter feeding locations. For all treatment recommendations you should always consult with your local veterinarian for advice.

The user must insure that the pesticide is applied in strict compliance with label directions.

The overall goal of a sound external parasite program is to manage the pests in a manner that reduces stress to the animals, as well as reduce the risk of pathogen transmission from the parasites. A comprehensive management plan for external parasites on livestock will be variable and unique to individual operations. The key to a successful parasite management program is continual monitoring of the herd.
