It's a red day, red month

STIGLER, Jan. 28 —Have a boss or a co-worker you’d like to see locked up? How about seeing a school principal or a state representative kiss a pig?

Well, the practical nursing class at Kiamichi Technology Center in Stigler is getting ready for all of the above and more, as class members get people to participate in Heart Awareness Month.

National Heart Awareness Month encompasses the entire month of February, but events really kick off with National Wear Red Day on Feb. 5. That’s a day the nursing students and the Amreican Heart Association are asking people to wear red as a reminder to promote healthy hearts, whether through diet and exercise, through learning cardiopulmonary rescucitation or through just supporting the American Heart Association.

“I’m a big supporter of the American Heart Association,” said nursing instructor Heather Fenton. “I’ve been a CPR instructor for 20 years and I know that the work they do really makes a difference.”

In addition to the special day for wearing red, the students are promoting heart health and the heart association in other ways. For instance, on Feb. 12, they’ll be performing free risk assessments on the KTC campus from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The risk assessments include checking the blood pressure and body mass index for participants, with recommendations for those who need to see a physician.
