Community School prepares for new round of classes

STIGLER, Jan. 21 — Guitar, golf, karate and quilts — just a few of the things people in the community said they’d like to learn about when the Stigler Community School opened its doors last fall.

About 100 students signed up to take courses through the community school, learning about a variety of subjects not generally taught in regular school classrooms. Or, if taught, the subjects are generally taught to young people as part of their regular school curriculum, not to adults.

Some students learned about basic chords on the guitar, while others learned basic drawing techniques, quilting, flower arranging, beginning computers or beginning digital photography. A yoga class proved so popular that students asked to have classes two times a week rather than one, and 26 young people signed up to learn about cheerleading.

“Some classes didn’t make and some we just couldn’t get an instructor for,” said Sandy McCoy, director of the Community School.

Now the Community School is ready to open its doors to a new round of classes, inviting students to learn about things that pique their interest. New classes will begin in February, McCoy said.
