STIGLER, Jan. 7 — Blake Wilson, a senior at Stigler High School, recently competed in the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association State Free Throw Contest. Making 222 out of 245 free throws gave Wilson a second-place finish.
The free throw contest is hosted by the OBCA and is a statewide competition. Each school in the state is allowed to send two players to represent their school.
The players first compete at regionals, then on to the state competition.
Wilson competed at the Regional 6 contest on Dec. 19 at Pryor. After shooting a total of 120 free throws, Wilson made 114, advancing him to the state contest.
On Dec. 28, Wilson traveled to Union High School in Tulsa for the noon start time. After a first round loss, he won four straight rounds. With a shooting score of 89 made shots out of 100, Wilson advanced to the finals. The state finals were held later that night during halftime of the Tournament of Champions.
The finals consisted of only two players, Wilson and Jacob Fish of Glenpool. After a 25-shot round, Wilson finished in second, missing six free throws. Fish took first, missing only two.
Wilson was awarded an OBCA 2009-2010 State Free Throw runner-up plaque for his achievement.
