Time for a new roof: Council OKs funding for theater repair

STIGLER, June 18 — A leaking roof and puddles on the floor may soon be a thing of the past, as Time Theatre gets much-needed roof repairs.
The Stigler City Council approved on June 8 paying for repairing the roof of the old theater, which is owned by the city and leased to Bill Cariker.
The issue of the theater roof had come up in May, but the council did not take any action at that time beyond asking City Manager Jim Smith to see what he could find out.
“I’d hate to think of us losing the theater,” said council member Randy Mouser. “It’s something that brings people to town. It’s kind of a landmark that’s been there for years.”
Other council members agreed.
Cariker told councilors that the theater has major problems with leaks, making it difficult to maintain and operate. “It’s a lot more work than you might think anyway, the leaks just make it worse,” he said.
The council approved Casto Miller Roofing Co., of Fort Gibson, to repair the theater roof at a cost of $4,720.
“The next closest bid was a lot higher than that,” Smith said.
Councilors also gave property owner Richard Klinger 90 days to get a house at 310 N.E. F St. up to code or it will have to be torn down. Klinger said he’d bought the house as an investment with the intent of repairing it, but had run into some difficulty getting the work done.
“You really should have a qualified electrician and carpenter look at that before you invest a lot of money in it,” Mayor Larry Godfrey advised. “I’d hate to see you waste your money and not be able to get it up to code.
